Mine Searches - Cornwall’s experts

mining-geologist-searching-legacy-plan.JPG

A Mine Search is an archival report based on an assessment of historic plans, sections and reports of former mines throughout the County. The expert interpretation of this legacy data allows our researchers to assess whether the property concerned is at risk from subsidence caused by historical mining activity. If a risk is identified, then it is quantified and recommendations are made.

Most properties in Cornwall and Devon are free from the risk of mining related subsidence, but there are enough problem properties for it now to be essential that all properties in Cornwall and parts of West Devon MUST have a mine search prior to obtaining mortgages, insurance or planning permissions.
We have delivered mine searches for more than 20,000 properties in the region.

Request for a mine search

Your requests for mine searchs can be made by post, fax or e-mail. Requests MUST include a plan as well as the client’s details. The plan must clearly outline the property or site, and for this a copy of the Land Registry map or an OS map excerpt is normally sufficient. Call us on 01872 560 200.

Turnaround Time

We aim to have reports completed within 1 working week at peak times. Often reports are completed faster, and expedited/urgent reports can often be completed within 48 hours - call us for details.

Regional Expertise

We have delivered mine searches for more than 20000 properties and sites in the region. The quantity of legacy data on land and property grows daily, giving us a resource of unrivalled depth. Many local mine search consultants learned their trade within our company.

Expert Interpretation

Our research team possess an unrivalled knowledge and understanding of Cornish metal mines. No amount of external study and enquiry can equip one for the work of carrying out conveyancing mine searches in quite the way that actual experience of mining in the Duchy can. The many idiosyncrasies of metal lodes, the strange and often unpredictable vagaries of methods of ore extraction and the variety of types of mineral working practiced over the centuries in the south-west remain a puzzle for those without ‘hands on’ experience in the industry. Our experienced staff are all trained by Camborne School of Mines, hold relevant qualifications, and can draw on centuries of experience derived from the mining industry.

For these reasons we believe that Crofty Consultancy offers a service that is unrivalled in the field of mining consultancies. Added to this, the possession of the largest and most comprehensive collection of mining reports, plans, sections and other relevant data, gives Crofty Consultancy a distinct advantage over other relative new-comers to the business. Our archive has been assembled over a period of 160 years. As other Cornish mining companies closed, their individual collections were brought to the mine. In 1978 the mine acquired the large and valuable Tehidy Mineral Collection, and since then we have been gathering obscure plans and reports to supplement our archive. We have also benefited from archive material graciously donated by the late John Brock OBE.

In December 2001 we acquired the complete archive and reports from Jay Mineral Services, a former rival company, thus greatly expanding our already unrivalled archive.
